Vocally, Jekyll/Hyde is a lengthy and demanding role, and Burke is well up to the task. The same can be said of Emily Karol as Emma Carew, Jekyll's sweetly caring fiancée, and Carly Neely as Lucy Harris, a curvy hooker with the requisite heart of gold who loves Jekyll for his kindness but, at least in the "Dangerous Game" number, is drawn, almost against her will, to Hyde's bad boy abusive sexuality. All three are excellent singers who perform multiple audience-pleasing ballads, conveying the often-overwrought emotions the songs demand.

By contrast, Poornima Kirby brings a world of warmth and poise to her small role as Angelo's spurned fiancee. In the low-comedy subplot about the city's bawdyhouses, Aaron Shariff, Nathan Wolfe Coleman and Emily Karol are particularly amusing. But they're all outclassed by Tom O'Keefe, who gives a subtle, inventive performance as the Duke. As these young actors continue their careers, he's the one to watch.

Hurwitz sings Ian Milliken’s songs nicely on several occasions. He is all juvenile charm as Claudio and an hilarious fool as Froth. Sharff brings plenty of welcome comic relief as Pompey, and Karol is a hoot in her broad portrayal of Elbow.

Standout performers are Nathan Wolfe Coleman, lecherous townsman Lucio; Emily Karol, low-brow sheriff Elbow; Aaron Sharff; flophouse resident Pompey; and Tom O'Keefe, wise yet bookish Duke. Here again, in keeping with tragi and comedy and measure for measure, each actor (except for O'Keefe in the lead role) played both sides of the ying and yang – not an easy task for seasoned thespians, let alone theatre students.
